What Any2ICO Does

Any2ICO is a free image to ICO converter that turns common image formats into multi-size ICO files. ICO is the standard container format for favicons and Windows application icons. Unlike a single PNG or JPG, an ICO file can bundle multiple resolutions — 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, and 256 pixels — into one file, so browsers and operating systems always have the right size available.

The tool accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, and SVG images up to 10 MB each. You choose which sizes to include, pick a scaling mode (contain or cover), set the background to transparent or white, and download a ready-to-use .ico file. If you have multiple images, batch conversion packages them all into a ZIP archive.

Any2ICO is built for web developers adding favicons, designers preparing app icons, and anyone who needs a quick ICO file without installing software. There are no accounts, no daily limits, and no cost. Open the page, drop your image, and convert.

How the Conversion Works

When you start a conversion, Any2ICO renders your image onto an HTML Canvas element at each selected icon size. The Canvas API, built into every modern browser, handles the decoding and scaling. Each rendered size is exported as PNG bytes, and then the png-to-ico library assembles all sizes into a single ICO container. The result is a standards-compliant ICO file ready for use as a favicon or application icon.

This means the actual image-to-ICO conversion step happens entirely in your browser. There is no server-side rendering queue. Conversion speed depends on your device's processing power, not on network conditions. Once the page has loaded, the conversion logic itself does not require an internet connection.

Each source image produces one ICO file. If you select sizes 16, 32, and 48, your ICO will contain three embedded PNG frames at those dimensions. For a deeper understanding of the ICO format and why multi-size matters, see our guide on what is the ICO format.

Privacy and File Handling

Any2ICO is designed to perform the conversion step in your browser. However, it is important to understand that not all steps are purely local. How your file reaches the browser depends on which import method you use.

Device file selection — When you select a file from your device (via browse, drag-and-drop, or paste), the browser opens it directly and nothing is uploaded. While you work with your own files, the only requests the page makes are for the page itself, analytics, and ads.

URL import — If you import an image by URL, the server fetches the image through /api/import/url and returns it to your browser. This is necessary because browsers cannot freely fetch images from arbitrary domains due to CORS restrictions.

Google Drive and OneDrive — Imports from cloud storage services are fetched through /api/import/google-drive or /api/import/onedrive. The server retrieves the file from the respective service and passes it to your browser for conversion.

In all cases, the final conversion from image data to ICO happens client-side. For complete details on data handling, cookies, and third-party services, see our privacy policy and the article on privacy, uploads, and imports.

Supported Formats and Limitations

Any2ICO accepts seven input formats: PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, and SVG. Each file can be up to 10 MB. The output is always a single ICO file containing one or more embedded PNG frames at your chosen sizes.

Format Notes

  • PNG — Best starting format. Supports transparency, which is preserved in the ICO output when you select a transparent background.
  • JPG/JPEG — Widely available. No transparency support; empty areas will use your chosen background color.
  • WebP — Modern web format. Both lossy and lossless WebP files are supported.
  • GIF — Only the first frame of animated GIFs is used for conversion.
  • BMP — Uncompressed bitmap. Large files may approach the 10 MB limit quickly.
  • AVIF — Next-generation format. Support depends on your browser; recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari handle AVIF well.
  • SVG — Vector format. Some SVGs may not render as expected if they use external resources, missing fonts, or lack a viewBox attribute.

Not Supported

TIFF and HEIC files are not accepted as input. ICO files cannot be used as input either — Any2ICO converts to ICO, not from it. If you need to convert from ICO to another format, a different tool is required.
